March Why is ground tying important? Ground tying is important because it teaches your horse to be independent while you are walking around. It also is important because if you want your horse to stay in a specific spot and not follow you then ground tying is needed in order to do so. What are the steps to teach the ground tying? 1. First you have to teach your horse to lower their head by applying pressure. 2. Second you have to say “woah” and then put your hand up and back away slowly. 3. Retreat and Reward! What should you master first before teaching your horse to be "sent" over an obstacle? In order to send your horse over obstacles you have to master lunging. It won’t be possible to send your horse over obstacles until you have a good foundation with lunging. True or False? When trotting with your horse to speed them up you should use your lunge rope to tap them in front of their chest. False, when asking for a faster pace you have to ask from the hind end. This will increase the momentum instead of slowing or stopping the pace if you were to tap them in the front of their chest.

October with Baby Que- This month went really well. Baby Que and I spent time getting to know each other. Baby Que is very opinionated but she is also very fun and willing. This month we started working with tarps and she had her first bath ever! Where we give our horses baths they have to walk into a very tight space. The first time I ever tried to walk her in there she went right in! At first she was unsure of the water but then realized that it won't harm her. She even drinks from the hose. Baths sometimes take a while and I have noticed that she gets bored and is very impatient easily. She almost seems to be fidgety. One of the most important things I'm working with Baby Que on is boundaries and personal space. When she walks next to me she gets too close to the point where she steps on my feet or the back of my heels. Every time I feel that she is in my bubble I ask her to back up and we just repeat the process until we can walk around a little bit without having to ask her to give me space. Baby Que is putting on weight quite nicely and I think by July she will be a very pretty horse. It's amazing what good nutrition can do. Our farrier came for the first time since I've had her and she did better that I thought she was going to. My farrier is awesome and worked through some of her temper tantrums but each time he comes out I think it will get better and better.

July with Baby Que- This month has been just as rough as July. With Baby Que being injured it put a major hault in preparations for the state show. On a positive note Baby Que is healing up amazing and my vet and I are so so so happy with it! She is not lame on her leg so we decided to do a 1-2 minute routine showing off a few skills. Baby Que is one of the most willing horses I have ever worked with so she's making this easier on both of us. We are working on getting something together to showcase. Baby Que has lost some weight during this injury but she is now gaining more and more weight. This month I also dewormed her because she was due. Through everything Baby Que has been through in June and July she is still the same sweet and willing horse. Luckily Baby Que is not lame so we are brushing up on some skills that we will be incorporating into our pattern. We are touching up on her side passing and sending her over obstacles. I was very surprised by how well she remembered how to side pass to me because it has been several months since we last worked on it. After she got the hang of just the side pass I had her side pass over a log to me. I'm excited to see what we can put together in the short amount of time that we have. Baby Que has been so fun to work with just sad that our last month together was spent wrapping her leg mostly.

June with Baby Que- This month for Baby Que and I was the most disappointing month during this program by far. At the beginning of the month, we were starting to get our pattern and music ready for the state show. Since school was out I was working with Baby almost every day. On June 17th I was feeding my horses and that's when I saw a huge wound on her right front leg. My heart dropped to the floor. When I saw the wound I could see the tendon in her leg. We called the vet and got worked into their schedule. When our vet cleaned the wound she examined the wound and we were relieved that she did not break or tear any ligaments or tendons. Due to this injury, she was put on stall rest for the rest of the time I have Baby Que. Her wound had to be wrapped every day and compression wraps had to be put on there several times throughout the day. 4 days after the injury I gave her an antibiotic shot. By the end of June, it started to heal surprisingly well. She still has a long way to go, but Baby Que should recover fully. Due to this injury, we had to stop all work for the state show completely. The maximum amount of movement Baby Que was allowed was 15 minutes of walking around in the arena and over small ground poles. This injury was absolutely devastating but Baby Que has been absolutely amazing through all of it.

May With Baby Que- This month has been extra busy for me so I have not gotten to spend as much time as I would've liked to spend with Baby Que. I hauled Baby Que to our last district show and she just observed while I showed my other horse. She was very well mannered in the stall and just calmly ate her hay. During the time that I didn't have any classes I walked her around the whole facility and she did absolutely amazing. Each time I trailer her somewhere she just gets better and better. Our 4h leader noticed how much improvement we have made compared to the very first time I brought her to a 4h event. Since I have had Baby Que she has grown a whole hand. I would say that she stands at 15.2/15.3. Baby Que is a clumsy horse but I feel that's because she is still growing. As she continues growing she is learning how to control her long legs better. This month we focused on trotting over ground poles and small jumps. From the beginning to the end of the month she made a lot of progress with this. Each time I worked with her we worked on trotting off together and learning to keep her head down. When we first started this new skill she would trot off raising her head to the ceiling. After the first couple of sessions of working on this, she picked it quite quickly. This month I started coming up with music and theme ideas for the state show.
