October Discussion Post

Welcome to our very first monthly discussion! A “Question of the Month” will be posted on the 1st of every month. Your response (at least 250 words) is due in the portal by October 31st at 11:59 PM. In addition to your own response, you are also required to comment on at least one of your peers’ posts.

These discussions are meant to help you reflect, share ideas, and learn from one another. This month’s topic is: Set three goals for the year. One should be a short-term goal, one should be a long-term goal, and one should be a personal growth goal. Be specific and explain how you plan to work toward achieving it with your horse and within the Homes for Horses program.

For the past month Tinkerbell and I have been working together to establish a strong connection and bond. Tinkerbell has shown many strengths so far. She has a sweet, kind and sometimes stubborn personality. For the upcoming year that I will be working with Tinkerbell, I am focusing on the following three goals for Tink and I. First, is the short term goal to strengthen her lunging so she is able to get proper exercise. Tinkerbell was initially unwilling to lunge or even move any faster than a walk. With guidance and lots of persistance I-ve recently been able to get her to lunge. Together we still nees to strengthen this skill so she is able to be active each day and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Second, a long term goal is to build her confidence and for her to not be as shy or skittish toward new people or new things. Tinkerbell tends to nervous around new people or when being introduced to new things.  She needs to build more confidence and trust to become more open and willing to try new things.  By the end of the year I would love for her to be a stronger and more confident horse than she already is.  Finally, goal number three is for me to gain more experience and confidence in workong with and training a horse. Tinkerbell is my first hands-on experience with a horse of my own. I need to grow and develop my own confidence with her. I am excited to continue growing with her through this opportunity.
